The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam
Stepping into the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam is like walking into the vibrant world of the artist himself. Seeing these iconic pieces up close is truly breathtaking, allowing you to appreciate the texture and emotion imbued in every brushstroke.

Very enjoyble experience, the captain of the cruise gave us a very funny and interesting description of the city, and the staff gave an excellent service.
The canal cruise was perfect, the captin come guide gave us headphones to listen in our own language. The riverboat was clean and tidy, easy to walk on and off, it was a nice day and we got some beautiful pictures!! A great end to a fantastic tourist holiday!!
We did the early evening cruise to see the lights of the city. Easy to get tickets by turning up and allocated the next cruise. There is an audio link that you can use, but we decided to just sit outside and watch the views. An hour cruise which was interesting and pretty.
We had an hour cruise around the canals in Amsterdam and learnt a lot whilst doing it. We really enjoyed every second. My five year old didn’t want to get off. The captain was also very knowledgeable.
This is a must do on your list of things to do while visiting Amsterdam. It takes you through areas that you may not be able to walk to. The captain points out things of interest and tells the story behind it.
We had a really lovely time on the one-hour canal cruise. Our captain was very lovely and cracked a good few jokes throughout the tour. The GPS guided tour via the headphones was a fab idea and there were so many language options available which was a really pleasant surprise. We learned so much about the history of the city and the tour even helped us to find places to visit again in further detail after the tour. The price was extremely reasonable considering the excellent experience we got, and our boat even left a little early which was nice. All in all, we would definitely recommend it!
We really enjoyed it. We show I I amsterdam cards at the ticket office ans were on a boat and on our way within 10 minutes. Our captain (Tony I believe was his name) was lovely ,cheerful and very knowledge of the area, he also had 2 traniees with him and they were also lovely. The facilties were clean. If I hadn't have had the I amsterdam card I would have still paid what the price was (which I think is reasonable).
1st time in Amsterdam and loved it Booked on the Lovers Canal cruise early in the morning to get a feel for the city and to get our bearings The tour showed the highlights of the city and the comentry was good
sitting backward is really annoying... Except that I think it is very nice and the captain was a nice guy, he was really funny, making jokes.
Booked through Get Your Guide literally 20 mins before boarding. They let us join a boat that was boarding as soon as we got there, which was great, no standing around as they weren’t so busy. We took a daytime trip and glad we did. Maybe evening cruises would be better in warmer months with open boats. The boat was modern, clean and warm and no condensation at all during any part of our cruise. The headphones were included and the audio commentary was interesting. The captain also added bits and pieces of extra info which was appreciated. It was a great introduction to the canals of Amsterdam as we decided to do this trip literally an hour after arriving in Amsterdam. It helped us with our bearings and with general historical info about the city. The reason for 4 rather than 5 stars is that we seemed to stay on one canal, no museums seen, no Anne Frank house, nothing like that, which was a shame as lots of tourists probably visit these places afterwards. Maybe the canal boat starting from the museums area take that route? We took the one from the station. There are lots of canal boat companies, but we were more than happy with Lovers as their boats appear a lot more modern than many others we saw. I would definitely recommend the cruise and my teenage daughter said it was one of the nicest things we did when in Amsterdam.
A amazing tour with some great canal boat skills performed and a great host. This tour is very much for couples and being alone I felt a little out of place.
Done the open boat tour during the summer. A great way to see the city and the audio guide gave plenty of information along the way. Extremely relaxing to the point I almost fell asleep half way around. Would definitely do the tour again if I’m back in Amsterdam
Guide was very friendly and knowledgeable. Although it rained, I still enjoyed the tour. The only complaint was the audio was difficult to hear at times.
Nice relaxing hour around the canals. Duco (sorry if I have not got the name correct) was informative with history and fun facts. Would recommend.
It was educational, slowed down at the right places. The pilot was polite and explained well- was fun and energetic.
Partenza vicino ala stazione centrale. Durata circa un ora. Visita dei canali principali di Amsterdam. Da provare
We walked in thinking we’d probably be there for 1 hour. We spent 3 hours there. So much to see and to admire. VVG’s work is phenomenal. They had aspects too for a sound and also smell experience - so it wasn’t just all about visually appreciating his work. They also detailed his mental health struggles leading up to his death. Really loved our time spent here
Great for all thing Van Gogh. Lots & lots of his work.
I enjoyed this experience. I am not a big art museum fan but I know Van Gogh's story and I wanted to go to this museum and it was great! I saw the La Famille Roulin exhibit initially and I enjoyed that. It wasn't just his paintings on display but paintings by Paul Gauguin also. Some art museums can be overwhelming in size and this one wasn't as I went and saw other paintings by Van Gogh after the La Famille Roulin exhibit. They also had an interactive area with an outline of one of the paintings for people to use color pencils to fill in.
Fantastic museum with a wealth of Van Gogh material. Free entry with Museumcard avd worth going again for the newer temporary exhibitions. Plenty of opportunities to buy a souvenir or book too. Very friendly staff.
The Van Gogh Museum is an essential destination; it is advisable to secure online tickets in advance for your preferred visit date & time and to utilize the optional automated audio guide. Although the museum does not house an extensive collection of Vincent Van Gogh's works, it does feature one of his most renowned pieces, 'Sunflowers'.
Husband arranged for a tour. We loved the museum. Loved the tour guide. Her name is Anna. I would arrange a tour with her again in a heartbeat.
An absolutely stunning collection. Even if, like me, you never gave much thought to Van Gogh, seeing this collection of his works will elevate him to among the greatest painters you've ever encountered.
So much artwork! I had no idea Van Gogh created so many peices. We did the self guided tour and it was very enjoyable. I did not feel rushed as we could take our time.
Wonderful museum dedicated to Vincent and the artists he was friends with and who influenced him. You can stay as long as you like, we stayed for 3 hours. Admission a bit pricey at €25.00 but we felt it was worth it. Beware of the coffee shop/restaurant - very expensive. The gift shop is also expensive. So only buy what you really want. Many items can be found in gift shops elsewhere in the City for a fraction of the price. But, overall we found it to be a place of joy despite Vincent's sad end!
This museum has a huge collection of paintings of Van Gogh. The audio tour tells about Vincents life and family. Buy your tickets in advance if possible for this museum. It was sold out on the rainy day I went. Make sure your phone is charged for free audio or buy audio tour for about 5 euros. The site has a great cafe, and nearby is the modern Stedilijkt and Rijksmuseum. On the weekends there is a large open air market offering foods and hand craft items.
I was very impressed by the museum and the experience here. I will say I am skeptical of single artist museums as they typically lack the diversity. However, they do a great job of bringing in other artists and entire presentation is so well designed, plus Van Gogh is an interesting personality on his own. The artwork is amazing both in quantity and quality. Even more incredible to think that Van Gogh was neither celebrated nor appreciated in his own time. The wisdom of his sister-in-law to hold on to the collection as one of the interesting stories you learn from the visit. You will see the best paintings of Van Gogh, and you will see the entire arc of his painting career. Additionally, the building and presentation are a great part of the visit. You will need to secure a ticket and time reservation before your visit. While there are a lot of people there, the way you progress along the route with audio tour makes you feel less crowded. While you can stay as long as you want, we entered at our 9:30 time slot and left just before 11:00 to make our time for the Rijksmuseum. We were able to hear the entire audio tour on a moderate pace. It is a top 5 visit in Amsterdam. Do not miss this experience and plan for it before you go.
I wasn't a Van Gogh fan, but his art and the simplicity of how the interwove what drove him as a painter with examples of his work and inspired him (other works of his contemporaries) changed my mind. Also, with age comes a little more wisdom or at least appreciation for someone going through mental distress and depicting his emotions through his work. Go Van Gogh!
My spouse and I visited this museum several years ago and were quite impressed. I think, however, that it has improved over the years. Of the Stedelijk, the Rijksmuseum, and the Van Gogh, we enjoyed this one most. The temporary exhibition, "Yellow. Beyond Van Gogh’s Colour," was engrossing. Its exploration of the meaning of yellow to Van Gogh and its use by his contemporaries was an interesting curatorial conception. The various scents interspersed with the art came across as extremely clever and creative. I recommend this museum highly.
Wonderful collection of pieces which have been perfectly curated. Highly recommend for anyone visiting!
Firstly, book well in advance. Tickets sell out 1 to 2 weeks before. The museum can get crowded. Go early, pack light, or use the cloak room. Get an audio guide for a more comprehensive experience and without having to squeeze with other people to read the descriptions. Don't forget to visit the yellow room where the sunflowers are! You'll spend a few hours there but it's doable, not huge like the Rijksmuseum.
Great museum! Wonderful experience. Just note the tickets you get from Trip Advisor come from a third party operator. Downloading the tickets was very confusing. When you get the link click on contact tour operator and your tickets will download. Just super confusing!!!!
What a wonderful museum. Definitely get the audio guide - offers great narrative and background on the painter and his works. Ruks Museum is great - this is even better.
I visited here 16 years ago - tourism is much greater today. This is a wonderful and well curated museum. If possible I recommend 1) get 9am ticket 2) get audioguide and follow the extended tour We were some of the first people admitted and the first half of our just over 2 hour visit was enjoyed with few visitors. By the time we left about 11:15 the stairways were crowded. The audioguide provided by the museum is excellent, inexpensive and high tech. It truly enhances your visit
Do not miss this experience. I am not a big art lover, but appreciate Van Gogh and thought the museum was well done.
This has been a bucket list stop for years and can finally say I’ve been here. Getting to see 90% of Van Gogh masterpieces was amazing do wish I good have seen starry night but I know that new New York
Beautiful Manageable large museum. Well organized and not overwhelming! Wonderful staff
Great selection of van Gogh‘s work. Great idea to compare it to other paintings of great artists of that period. We saw also the exhibition about the colour yellow in April 2026, which was as fun as eclectic. Don‘t miss the van Gogh museum when in Amsterdam.
One cannot miss this experience while visiting Amsterdam.
Brilliant something for everyone and very informative and interesting
Well worth a visit. Hello was such a prolific artist and to see so many of his works was wonderful. Famous sunflower painting and potato pickers painting. In the restaraunt you can get cakes shaped as a sunflower which is a fun thing to do while you visit.lifts to all floors. Nicely spaced out art so enough room to move around.
We were very impressed with this museum. It was spacious and well laid out. It was good to stand close to the paintings and the descriptions were helpful and informative. The story of Van Gogh’s life was well explained and moving. The paintings were a feast for the eyes and the overall experience was memorable. Highly recommended.
Love Van Gogh’s work so really wanted to visit here. Permanently exhibition was really good and puts his work in context, showing progression and influences. The special ‘Yellow’ exhibition, starting with the Sunflowers and radiating out with the inclusion of lots of other artists was excellent. The immersive part of this exhibit was lovely
Firstly, it's very expensive and recommend getting an advance ticket to avoid the queues and they sometimes stop on the day show ups if they're full. Luckily, we'd planned ahead and had an enjoyable day. The museum itself is excellent and you can get very close to the paintings, including the most famous,.unlike say The Louvre, where much is kept at a great distance. Recommend getting the audio guide which is extra but only a few euros and worth it. Staff were friendly and helpful and security unobtrusive. The catering isn't great and we went to the very expensive 'restaurant' which isn't upmarket but you get full meals and table service. However they were busy and we had long waits for everything from ordering to paying. There's also a big chunk at the end of the museum that wasn't really about Van Gogh but modern artists who had some tenuous influence which we didn't enjoy. It takes most of the day but you can get around everything in a day comfortably and a recommendation.
I booked tickets for the Van Gogh museum in advance and I'm glad I did as there were no tickets available on our only full day in Amsterdam. I also booked us audio guides and they were worth every penny. We had a great experience and would both recommend it. I booked 9.45am tickets and would suggest going earlier if possible, it definitely got busier as the morning went on.
Nice museum, everyone must to visit it. Museum shop is also very good
Loved it... Well worth a visit
Great experience to see the paintings and learn about VanGough and that period. Take the audio tour!
Great experience to see the paintings and learn about VanGough and that period. Take the audio tour!
Must see if you’re visiting Amsterdam or Netherlands. Amazing display of Van Gogh paintings including other artists such as Claude Monet. Most famous pieces include Sunflowers and The Potato Eaters, along with many lesser known paintings just as beautiful. 5/5
Only thing that kept it from getting 5 stars was the crowd. Even with the reservation system it seemed a little crowded at times. This is a must see in Amsterdam & the audio tour is worth it.
Enjoyable afternoon at the Van Gogh Museum! The special exhibit "Yellow" was wonderful. Nice places to have coffee and something to eat. Fun shop.
Had a great time and all the staff were very nice. I think it was actually not too crowded for a Saturday which was a nice surprise even though it was sold out. I was able to see everything I intended to and the audio guide worked very well! Thank you.
An awesome experience and understanding his life was mind blowing
The Van Gogh Museum is exceptionally well curated and easy to navigate. The collection of works by Vincent van Gogh is extensive, and the additional pieces from contemporaries add helpful perspective. The audio guide is well worth it, especially the Masterpieces tour, which highlights the most important works in a clear and engaging way.
Visiting the Van Gogh Museum was honestly amazing. Seeing the paintings up close and learning more about his life gave the artwork so much more meaning. The museum is well organized and easy to explore at your own pace. It was definitely one of the highlights of my time in Amsterdam.
Loved this visit far more than I thought I would. I like van gogh's work and knew a little of his life. However this museum explored his work and his life simultaneously so I gained a far greater appreciation of his works and looked at many in a new light. The relationship with his brother Theo was fascinating as was the story of how the museum was founded upon the altruism and pride of van gogh's family for Vincent's work. The experience touched me which I must say surprised me. A must visit if in Amsterdam.
Very modern, professionally organised museum/gallery - I wouldn't consider myself a particular art lover however with Van Gogh being one of the world's most famous artists in history I wanted to go during my visit to Amsterdam and wasn't disappointed. There are plentiful lockers to store your belongings in so you're not walking around in wet coats, carrying bags etc. and the café in the main atrium was nice to fuel up for the visit. The art pieces are spaced out well so only the most popular paintings are crowded and generally you can make your way around at your leisure - we didn't have a tour or audio guide (mainly because, as above, we're not that into art so wouldn't have benefited from this). The location of the museum itself was also well positioned for our trip to the Christmas markets outside, so if you are visiting Amsterdam in December this is something to note!
Really amazing art and a must go if you are an art lover! Only thing I’d say is security were very rude to me on the door. Took a picture of the outside to show my mum I was there as the tickets were her birthday gift to me, and he refused to let me enter until I deleted the picture as he thought it was of him! It was embarrassing and left a sour start to the exhibition visit. The art and staff inside was all amazing!
Fantastic exhibition and well set out. The main permanent side was definitely worth the entry alone. Looking at Van Gogh development of his artwork was insightful. We did find the temporary side of the exhibition hall a bit of a disappointment but we’d already enjoyed the main part so wasn’t a big issue.
What an incredible enriching experience. We visited the museum with the audio book option and it was amazing. I strongly recommend this option not only for kids, but for adults also. It is filled with comments and insights on the life of Van Gogh that makes the visit even more interesting.
Not usually someone who spends a lot of time in art museums, but this was a great experience. The layout is clear and the collection is fascinating, even for someone who isn’t an art expert. Definitely worth a visit if you want to see Van Gogh’s work up close without feeling rushed.
I tried going to VanGogh Museum on last visit to Amsterdam but couldn't get tickets so this trip I made sure to reserve in advance. It was well worth the wait! Be sure to reserve your tickets.
Just as I imagined, the magnificent paintings are something everyone must see. I was a fan before, but seeing them in real life brings you a totally different experience. The colors are so much more vivid in person, and you can actually see the thick texture of his brushwork on the canvas. It’s one thing to see The Potato Eaters or Almond Blossom in a book, but standing inches away from them is a total game-changer. I loved reading his personal letters too, as they made him feel like a real person rather than just a famous name. If you’re in Amsterdam, you honestly can't skip this—it’s a memory I’ll keep forever.
One of the highlights of our trip to Amsterdam was visiting the museum. The collection is so rich and varied, and seeing so many Van Gogh pieces in one place was truly unforgettable. We got there early and had the chance to enjoy the exhibits without the crowds, which made the experience even better. It was nice not to feel rushed since you can take as much time as you like once you're inside. If you're ever in Amsterdam, this place is a must-visit!
Beautiful museum close to at least two others an honour to visit We booked ahead with a day and time makes it easier no huge queues
