Description

From undiscovered to world famous

Both Vincent van Gogh and the Amsterdam canals were once unknown to the world, but today they are known around the world. Van Gogh never lived to see how famous he would become but today he has a whole museum dedicated to his work. Explore more about his life through your visit and take a cruise through the canals he walked passed when he was still unknown to the world with this combination ticket.

The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam

Stepping into the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam is like walking into the vibrant world of the artist himself. The collection showcases his evolution, from early, sombre works to the explosion of colour in his later paintings like "Sunflowers" and "The Bedroom." Seeing these iconic pieces up close is truly breathtaking, allowing you to appreciate the texture and emotion imbued in every brushstroke.

The museum offers a fascinating glimpse into Van Gogh's life and struggles, making his art even more impactful. One of the artists Van Gogh was inspired by was Rembrandt van Rijn, to discover more about their connection visit Van Gogh & Rembrandt in Amsterdam in the Noorderkerk. It's a wonderful opportunity to explore the works of two Dutch masters.

Amsterdam City River Cruise

The canal cruise was perfect, the captin come guide gave us headphones to listen in our own language. The riverboat was clean and tidy, easy to walk on and off, it was a nice day and we got some beautiful pictures!! A great end to a fantastic tourist holiday!!

Early evening cruise

We did the early evening cruise to see the lights of the city. Easy to get tickets by turning up and allocated the next cruise. There is an audio link that you can use, but we decided to just sit outside and watch the views. An hour cruise which was interesting and pretty.

Great information finding cruise

We had an hour cruise around the canals in Amsterdam and learnt a lot whilst doing it. We really enjoyed every second. My five year old didn’t want to get off. The captain was also very knowledgeable.

A Must Try

This is a must do on your list of things to do while visiting Amsterdam. It takes you through areas that you may not be able to walk to. The captain points out things of interest and tells the story behind it.

A fab way to see Amsterdam

We had a really lovely time on the one-hour canal cruise. Our captain was very lovely and cracked a good few jokes throughout the tour. The GPS guided tour via the headphones was a fab idea and there were so many language options available which was a really pleasant surprise. We learned so much about the history of the city and the tour even helped us to find places to visit again in further detail after the tour. The price was extremely reasonable considering the excellent experience we got, and our boat even left a little early which was nice. All in all, we would definitely recommend it!

The captian made the experience

We really enjoyed it. We show I I amsterdam cards at the ticket office ans were on a boat and on our way within 10 minutes. Our captain (Tony I believe was his name) was lovely ,cheerful and very knowledge of the area, he also had 2 traniees with him and they were also lovely. The facilties were clean. If I hadn't have had the I amsterdam card I would have still paid what the price was (which I think is reasonable).

Go with Lovers

Booked through Get Your Guide literally 20 mins before boarding. They let us join a boat that was boarding as soon as we got there, which was great, no standing around as they weren’t so busy. We took a daytime trip and glad we did. Maybe evening cruises would be better in warmer months with open boats. The boat was modern, clean and warm and no condensation at all during any part of our cruise. The headphones were included and the audio commentary was interesting. The captain also added bits and pieces of extra info which was appreciated. It was a great introduction to the canals of Amsterdam as we decided to do this trip literally an hour after arriving in Amsterdam. It helped us with our bearings and with general historical info about the city. The reason for 4 rather than 5 stars is that we seemed to stay on one canal, no museums seen, no Anne Frank house, nothing like that, which was a shame as lots of tourists probably visit these places afterwards. Maybe the canal boat starting from the museums area take that route? We took the one from the station. There are lots of canal boat companies, but we were more than happy with Lovers as their boats appear a lot more modern than many others we saw. I would definitely recommend the cruise and my teenage daughter said it was one of the nicest things we did when in Amsterdam.

A Great Way To See The City

Done the open boat tour during the summer. A great way to see the city and the audio guide gave plenty of information along the way. Extremely relaxing to the point I almost fell asleep half way around. Would definitely do the tour again if I’m back in Amsterdam

Great education about Van Gogh

We heard about Van Gogh paintings but not about him as an individual. So visiting this museum allows us to better know the painter instead of the paintings alone. What an interesting man and journey for him and his paintings. So tragic how he ended his life though.

Magnificent collection

A magnificent collection of Van Gogh’s work housed in a superb museum. While many of the greatest Van Gogh pictures are in other museums such as the Met and Musee D’Orsay, nothing can compare with the breadth of this collection, and in particular the self portraits and the frenzied output from his final days. The collection survives through the dedication of his sister in law, the foresight of family and the Dutch state, and luck. The museum is big, filled with light and tells the story of Vincent’s life so well. It’s never crowded because ticket sales are strictly controlled so don’t think you can just turn up here - book at least 3 weeks in advance, and months out if you want to be certain. The cafes here are also good, especially the sunflower cake, and of course there’s a massive gift shop.

Must see with the audio phone. The art is always beautiful. But you’ll get to know Van Goghs life and relationships.

Great deal! No problems front of the line, walked right in. Being in the middle of a heat wave it was a no hassle moment that the 3 of us appreciated.

A Memorable Visit

We really enjoyed my visit to the Museum in Amsterdam. The layout made it easy to follow Van Gogh’s life and see how his art changed over time. Standing in front of his famous works felt special, and the museum gave a deeper understanding of the person behind the paintings. It was busy, but still worth it. A must-see if you’re in Amsterdam.

Worthwhile

Enjoyed the museum visit and saw many famous paintings. We are not big art lovers so didn’t spend long here it only took an hour. Was expensive to get in but it’s a once in a lifetime thing so worthwhile. A modern well laid out museum.

Get to know Vincent Van Gogh's life

We really enjoyed this museum. It is fascinating to see the timeline of Van Gogh's work and how it changed over the years. There are several floors (they do have an elevator) and there is much to see. They also show artwork of artist's that influeneced Van Gogh and that of artisits he has influenced.

Van Gogh!

Excellent museum for a special artist. Visited specific museum and we admire the paintings of Van Gogh even if the most famous panting of him is in New York museum. Worth to spend few more euro in order to get the audio guide is order to learn the whole story of the artist. Also there are additional exhibitions in the museum that you can visit.

Interesting but perhaps lacking a critical perspective

The museum documents the life and works of Van Gogh. I'd bought a (timed) ticket about ten days in advance for 9:30am and paid extra for the audio guide. You are unlikely to be able to get it on the day, I'd strongly suggest booking in advance direct on the museum's website at least two weeks in advance. I enjoyed the museum and the works they have - some famous ones are scattered around the world. The story can't be told without confronting his mental illness and that was covered reasonably well. Perhaps I missed it but I am surprised there wasn't a discussion and analysis of his vision and in particular whether he suffered from colour blindness. I also didn't notice any discussion of his heavy drinking and effects of wormwood from consumption of absinthe. Johanna van Gogh-Bonger is portrayed as someone solely interested in creating an artistic legacy. Theo Van Gogh's potential syphilis condition is mentioned briefly but I don't remember it being explicit about the obvious likely source. I am not sure on this but after the visit it occurred to me his family may have had too much input in creating a memorial rather than a more neutral museum. The timed tickets allow the museum to control the numbers in the museum. I'd say it was busy but I wouldn't say over-crowded on the Saturday I was there. There's an overly-complicated set of electronic lockers included in the ticket price. Don't forget your code and the locker you use.

Wonderful Collection of Masterpieces

We could not get enough of exploring this Museum as we truly love the works of Van Gogh. There are so many stunning masterpieces, some which I have never seen! It was also great to learn about his life though a bit melancholic. Worth the time the money

A Good Visit

We enjoyed visiting this very fine museum. You get good insights into the artist’s life and work. There’s a fine collection of his works as well as pieces by other artists with whom he had connections. The audio guide is very helpful. While there we had a delightful lunch in the cafe.

A Must-Visit for Art Lovers in Amsterdam

The Van Gogh Museum is an absolute must-visit in Amsterdam. It offers a beautifully curated journey through Van Gogh’s life and work, showcasing his most famous paintings alongside lesser-known pieces that highlight his growth as an artist. The layout is easy to follow, and the audio guide adds a lot of depth to the experience. It can get quite crowded, so booking tickets in advance is highly recommended. Whether you’re an art lover or just curious, the museum leaves a lasting impression and gives you a deeper appreciation for Van Gogh’s genius

Sunflowers and Self Portraits-The Brilliance of Van Gogh

Incredible museum for fans of Impressionism. Museum is laid out in a coherent manner with a manageable flow. Great audio tour. My only annoyance was the hordes of visitors taking selfies with the art. They aren’t quick about it and make it hard for other visitors to even see the work. Are you there to appreciate and learn or just impress your social media followers? Please be better guests.

We really enjoyed the museum, more so than some of the others. We were late for our timed entry, but still within the window, and didn't have a problem going in. Very well organized, and was enjoyable.

One of the best museums not just in Amsterdam but in all of Europe!

Van Gogh Museum is without a doubt one of the must-see attractions in Amsterdam. Dedicated to the world-renowned Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh, the museum contains the largest collection of van Gogh paintings and drawings in the world. There's a huge number of works on display, but a few worth mentioning are The Potato Eaters, The Yellow House, Sunflowers, Bedroom in Arles, and Wheatfield with Crows. The collection also includes nine of van Gogh's self-portraits and some of his earliest paintings. One of my favourite paintings here is Flowering Plum Orchard, which is based on the Japanese artist Utagawa Hiroshige's Plum Garden in Kameido, and I am also rather fond of The Sower, which was inspired by the work of the Frenchman Jean-Francois Millet. Although van Gogh was influenced by several artists, including Millet, Hiroshige, Claude Monet, and Paul Gauguin, his painting style is practically unique, which perhaps makes it easier to recognise his paintings than those of any other painter in history. The museum helps us appreciate van Gogh's place in art history by displaying many 19th century works from Rodin, Manet, Monet, Toulouse-Lautrec and other artists who lived during the same period as van Gogh. I have only visited this museum once, but I have seen van Gogh's works in many temporary and permanent exhibitions in London and I can honestly say that they never fail to move me. I don't think there's much more that I can say to convince you to visit the Van Gogh Museum, so I'll leave you with a quote from the great artist himself: "Paintings have a life of their own that derives from the painter's soul."

Awesome experience

What a museum ! So modern and full of Van Ghog’s masterpieces. Easily accessible and centrally located, the museum offers a deep dive into some of the artist’s work and at the same time offers a lot of information about his life and story. The museum shop is full of artist related merchandise.

Very educational

I'm glad we went here – also glad I booked a ticket online in advance as they were full on the day. They will let you in 30 mins before your ticket is timed for, they are pretty strict on carrying bags in and have free lockers should you need them. The museum is a pretty place, they have several floors of exhibits, by Van Gogh but also others. The printed info guides were very informative. All very nice and informative.

Booked ticket day before at 5pm.

Got tickets day before when they released them at 5pm Amsterdam time. You have to press send to get a text message with a code. Amazing museum. Saw sunflowers, blossom is downstairs, self portraits and the bed. Great shop too. Toilets inside. Could enter earlier than on ticket.

If you’re into Van Gogh or art, don’t miss this.

If you’re staying in a central station then this is a 15min walk from Dam Sq. Well serviced by tram and metro. Loo on the basement floor you descend to at entry and anything bigger than a snatch bag will have to be put into the free lockers. Up an escalator and there is a restaurant on your right which is splendid. We had a full lunch and it was top drawer. The loo’s on this level are less used and aromatically more pleasing than the entry level loo’s. Elevators can get you through the levels although we used the stairs. There is a spectacular changing digital wall mural on display from the stairs/elevator landings. Video and photography is allowed and staff couldn’t be more helpful nor pleasant. There aren’t many places to stop and sit on the few floor journey but there are some. I have a visceral reaction to Van Gough’s art, if you are like me - take tissue. I turned a corner and hit ‘Irissen’ and nearly dropped to one knee. Watching his art development through his time in the asylum was harrowing. Numerous artists were painting/sketching, mainly in front of ‘Sunflower’s’. There is a ‘bookshop’ on an upper level with a number of great keepsakes and a bigger shop on the basement level. I have no artist above Van Gogh and my eldest is an artist but we did lockers, loo, lunch, tour plus inter-actives, leisurely, in 3 hours.

A must-see in Amsterdam: very nice museum, well organized and with a lot of important artwork. One thing to keep in mind it that tickets can only be purchased online in advance, and it is often sold out - so make sure to get them early.

Incredible

If you enjoy Van Gogh's work, this is a must. The museum is amazing. The galleries follow his life's chronology with minimal reading - enough to gain insight, but not overwhelm. The galleries are spacious and allow visitors to easily flow through. There is a direction of travel that makes the visitor experience very efficient.

INCREDIBLY MOVING IMMERSION INTO THE FASCINATING WORLD OF VAN GOGH!

I previously wrote a very detailed review of this extraordinary museum and it was deleted, accusing me of using AI! Anyone who has read my reviews would know that is ridiculous. I am therefore going to give you the short version and STRONGLY ENCOURAGE YOU TO SPEND AN AFTERNOON AT THIS WONDERFUL MUSEUM. All those Van Gogh paintings in one place! It’s very memorable to stand in front of Sunflowers and his other famous works but also very moving to learn about his sister-in-law, Jo, and how she worked tirelessly after Theo died to promote Van Gogh’s work globally. Her son was the impetus for the building and space that you visit today. This is more than a display of his many works of art. It is an in-depth look at his work, experimenting with color, characters and even self-portraits and his strong desire to paint the world as he saw it. You leave here grateful for his many observations and for the gift of being able to see them up close.

A Must for an Art Lover

If you are an art lover, this is a must for you. You need to purchase your tickets online and I would also spend the few EUROs for the guided tour. This provides a lot of information on Van Gogh's life and the works of art that he created. It is a large museum so allow for a good amount of time, we were in the museum for almost 3 hours.

Really enjoyed the paintings and the story of the artist. Great that you can get close to the pictures and see the brush storkes and textures. Very interesting few hours. Only letdown was the coffee served in the coffee shop under the stairs.

A Masterpiece of Inspiration – Don’t Miss the Van Gogh Museum!

The Van Gogh Museum was a true highlight of our trip to Amsterdam. Even if you’re not an art expert, this place will draw you in. The layout is clear and easy to follow, taking you through Van Gogh’s life, work, and influences in a way that’s both moving and educational. My wife absolutely fell in love with art here—it was amazing to see her so inspired. The collection includes iconic pieces like Sunflowers, The Bedroom, and several self-portraits, all beautifully displayed. The museum also includes fascinating letters Van Gogh wrote, which give you real insight into his thoughts and struggles. Staff were friendly and helpful, and the overall experience was calm and respectful despite being busy. The atmosphere lets you take your time and truly appreciate the work. Top tip: book your tickets online in advance, as it does sell out quickly. We’d also recommend visiting early in the day to avoid peak crowds. Expect to spend at least 1.5 to 2 hours inside. If you're in Amsterdam, don’t miss this museum—it’s an unforgettable experience and offers a deeper understanding of one of the world’s greatest artists.

Touching art at it's finest

Great place to experience high art, learn about Van Gogh's life and his family. I've heard and seen his paintings only in books or online. Now I had a chance to see the paintings in person. Great place. It takes about 1,5-2 hours to cover everything. There was also a temporary exhibition, which was very interesting. Truly recomennd. Remember to buy tickets in advance via the Internet.

Best museum

My favourite museum in Amsterdam and probably my favourite of all! I like art but I'm not an artist nor historian. However, I fell for Van Gogh's art and the man itself. Some people say that Van Gogh cut his own ear to give it as a present to a prostitute. Yet, that's not confirmed by the museum. It's only told that Van Gogh cut his ear after a quarrel with his roommate. The guy left the house afterwards leaving Van Gogh alone.

Large collection, well described

Contains a large collection of work not just by Van Gogh but also others whose work he collected or who inspired him. Well put together. Excellent audio guide was not expensive. Worth noting some famous pieces (eg starry night) are not at this museum. Good pram access. Baby change facilities.

Must-do activity!

We enjoyed this experience! It was a good size museum that you could get through in 1-2 hours depending on your interest. Most of my family purchased the audio guides, but I went through the museum admiring the paintings and reading the descriptions and displays and did not feel like I missed out on anything. I would recommend this activity, but definitely purchase your tickets ahead of time because tickets will sell out.

A celebration Van Gogh's life and artwork in each and every room

Van Gogh's work is displayed throughout the museum in a way that gives visitors a great insight into his thought process and development. The audio guides have different settings that accomodate to the level of detail each visitor is interested in hearing. The museum itself is very spacious with plenty of benches, which allows visitors to move around at as fast or slow of a pace that they like. I won't even go into the breathtaking beauty of Van Gogh's artwork, because chances are if you are on this museum's tripadvisor page, you already know it. All I will say is that the paintings have so much more beauty in real life, that one coukd ever imagine.

So well laid out

This museum is over 50 years old now but feels so modern like it was opened in the last few months. You have to take the audio tour even for the small additional cost. Some don’t but I feel you would totally miss out. The museum itself has many of his paintings and letters as you would expect. Need to book in advance. Very easy to get around. Lots of people working here for your assistance. Easy to get to from centraal via 2 or 12 trams. Will need a few hours to see everything. Multiple gift shops. Even has a restaurant.

A Must-See Highlight of Our Amsterdam City Break!

I recently visited the Van Gogh Museum as part of a city break to Amsterdam with friends, and it was one of the highlights of our trip. The layout of the museum is great – it takes you through Van Gogh’s life and development as an artist. We got to see The Bedroom, Sunflowers, and Almond Blossom in person The audio guide was well worth it – it helped us appreciate details we might have missed otherwise. We spent around two hours there, which felt like the perfect amount of time, and even the museum shop was worth a browse If you’re in Amsterdam, especially with friends who appreciate art or history, I highly recommend making the Van Gogh Museum part of your itinerary.

Unmissable artistic journey in the heart of Amsterdam

The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam is a fantastic destination for art lovers, housing the world’s largest collection of Van Gogh’s paintings. The museum is modern, features many of his most famous paintings, like Sunflowers, The Bedroom and Almond Blossoms. Audio guides and informative displays make it easy to learn about Van Gogh’s life and artistic development. The museum is crowded, it is advisable to book tickets in advance, but the overall experience is inspiring and unforgettable. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Amsterdam. I recommend 2-3 hours to tour the museum.

Many van gogh paintings I hadn't seen

I suggest early reserve ticket as museum seemed crowded at the end of our visit. Also the day we visited there was a sold out sign up. My architect husband loved the design of the building. My only complaint was that irises hung on a corner which created a large backup and limited access to a wonderful work on the other side of corner 3 ft away. Sad which plenty of wall space further down.

Overwhelming! Must See

This was a great visit for it was just enchanting! I cannot fully explain the magic and awe of seeing so many masterpieces in succession as it is overwhelming. I was thrilled and so was my husband! I will definitely return for another visit and hopefully when there fewer people in the Museum

A glorious achievement

Lovingly curated by his brother's wife, then nephew, Amsterdam's Van Gogh Museum paints a careful picture of the aritst commonly slighted for his mental health issues. Easily the largest collection of Van Gogh's work, and beautifully arranged chronologically with references to letters from Vincent to Theo, the only single-artist museum I've seen that comes close is Warhol's in Pittsburgh.

Definitely put this on your list to visit

We only had time to visit one museum in Amsterdam, so I selected the Van Gogh Museum. Im so glad we did!!! It was a great experience. The layout of the museum takes you on a thoughtful journey through Van Gogh’s life, from his early sketches to his most iconic masterpieces. It was fascinating to see the evolution of his style and understand more about his personal struggles and inspirations. There are also several other sections, like his letters to his brother and other artists' works too. We took an audio guide and I do suggest this as it made displays more engaging. Also, the staff were helpful and welcoming. Whether you're a fan of Van Gogh or just appreciate art, this museum is a must-see when in Amsterdam.

Spacious space to experience his work

This museum is spacious and visitor numbers are restricted so good opportunity to look and ponder your favourite pieces . There are additional works by his associates linking you to the zeitgeist. Interesting work currently available includes John Madu who has incorporated Van Gough into his work. Cafe to take a break. Tips: You need to book in advance. Bags are searched and you will need to check in large bags. Length of visit? A couple of hours Have some fun at the photo opportunity at the end.

This was more intersting than my kids thought it would be. The audio tour shares a lot of fun interesting facts. We learned a lot!

A jewel in the city

This museum was an unexpected highlight of our recent visit to Amsterdam. I had no idea how large it was - or the extent of the collection - until we visited. I learned a lot about Van Gough and his family that I had not previously known (and I have studied a lot about art and toured a lot of museums). The museum collection is well curated, and take the visitor through a timeline that connects Van Gough to those who influenced his work and those whose work he has influenced. The museum has the most extensive collection of his work in the world, though a few of his better known works are housed in other museums. I highly recommend.
