Everything you need to know about the 2026 Amsterdam Canal Parade
From 25 July to 8 August, Amsterdam will be celebrating WorldPride. One of the best-known highlights is the Canal Parade, which takes place on August 1 this year. Between 12 noon and 6 pm, dozens of colourfully decorated boats will sail along a special route through Amsterdam’s canals. This year’s Canal Parade is particularly special, as it marks the 30th edition and forms part of WorldPride. Read on to find out everything you need to know about this spectacular event on Amsterdam’s canals.
A unique parade during Pride
Whilst Pride is celebrated in many cities with a parade of floats through the streets, in Amsterdam the parade takes place on the water. The iconic canals provide the backdrop for numerous colourfully decorated boats, making the Canal Parade unique in the world. Every year, hundreds of thousands of visitors from the Netherlands and abroad come to Amsterdam to experience this special event. The festive atmosphere is often compared to King’s Day. However, during the Canal Parade, the city isn’t decked out in orange, but is instead filled with the colours of the rainbow and people celebrating love, freedom and diversity together.
The history of the Canal Parade
What began as an idea to promote Amsterdam as an open and welcoming destination for the LGBTQIA+ community has grown into one of the city’s most beloved events. Pride Amsterdam is all about celebrating freedom, diversity and being able to be yourself. Although the first Canal Parade took place in 1996, the idea was conceived as early as 1992. That was the year Amsterdam put itself forward as a candidate to host the 1998 Gay Games. During the very first edition, around 45 boats sailed through the canals, attracting some 20,000 visitors. Every year, the Canal Parade has a new theme. Participants use their boats to convey a message and draw attention to everything that Pride stands for: equality, acceptance, visibility, freedom and the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community. In 2026, the parade’s theme will be UNITY. This theme stands for tolerance, solidarity and love.

A colourful route
The parade starts at the Oosterdok and sails via the Nieuwe Herengracht towards the Amstel. The boats then turn right to sail up the iconic Prinsengracht, which they follow all the way to the end. The Canal Parade finally ends at the Westerdok. Along the route, the beautifully decorated boats pass well-known Amsterdam landmarks, such as the Scheepvaartmuseum, the Skinny Bridge and the Anne Frank House. The boats cruise through the city at a leisurely pace, giving visitors lining the canals plenty of time to admire the stunning decorations and soak up the festive atmosphere.
The most beautiful Pride boats
The participating boats are decorated in all sorts of cheerful colours with Pride flags, balloons, bunting and glitter. This year, 80 unique boats will be taking part in the Canal Parade. These come from, amongst others, LGBTQIA+ organisations, businesses, government bodies and community organisations. Each participant expresses their support for inclusivity, diversity and equal rights in their own way. Every boat tells its own story and conveys a personal message, which is often visible in the text and creative decorations on the sides of the boats.

The best events during WorldPride Amsterdam
As well as the famous Canal Parade, many more special events are being organised during WorldPride. The festive kick-off takes place on 25 July in the Vondelpark, where WorldPride will be officially opened by none other than Royal Highness Queen Máxima. On the same day, the Pride Walk will take place between 11.00 and 15.00. This walk aims to raise awareness of freedom, equality and inclusivity. It is a moment when thousands of people come together to show just how important these values are.
Throughout the city on 31 July, 1 August and 2 August, various street parties will be organised, where visitors can enjoy music, a good time and the unique Pride atmosphere. From 4 to 8 August, the WorldPride Village will be held on the Museumplein. This multi-day festival offers a combination of food, music and information stands covering everything Pride stands for.
On 8 August, the WorldPride March will take place. This special procession combines a parade and a march in one. Unlike the Canal Parade, it does not take place on the water; instead, the route starts in Martin Luther King Park and ends at the WorldPride Village on Museumplein.
WorldPride will be brought to a festive close with the WorldPride Closing Concert, which begins at 5.30 pm on the final day. In addition to these major events, there are many more activities to enjoy throughout the city. Some of the events are free to attend, whilst others require a ticket booked in advance.
