The Amsterdam Historical Cruise

The Story of Amsterdam, your entry to the city.

The Amsterdam Historical Cruise
Including the exposition The Hoerengracht from 20-03-2010 till 29-08-2010.

Amsterdam. Long ago, a small settlement on the river Amstel. Later the centre of 17th-century world trade. Today, a colourful international city, with its special appearance and independently minded inhabitants. Paintings, exhibits, photos, film and interactive presentations show how the city has flourished, as well as the poverty, disease and war that Amsterdam has faced over the years. Situated in the inner-city building complex that once housed the civic orphanage, the museum tells the compelling story of the growth and heyday of this unique city. Go on a fascinating journey of discovery down seven centuries of the city’s history.

The Amsterdam Historical Museum presents one of the twentieth century’s most fascinating works of art: The Hoerengracht (1983 – 1988), by American artists Edward Kienholz and Nancy Reddin Kienholz. This worldfamous installa¬tion, a walkthrough reinterpretation of a section of Amsterdam’s red light district, measures over 13 by 4 metres. With its display of richly decorated rooms of window prostitutes, the work is more than a superb example of assemblage art; it is a monument to the Wallen of the 1980s. This is the first time the work is shown in Amsterdam.

The exhibition The Hoerengracht examines the connection between art and Amsterdam’s red light district. Alongside Kienholz’s work, Dutch and international contemporary artists comment on the theme of window prostitution. Role Exchange by Marina Abramovic, for exam¬ple, explores what happens when an artist and a prostitute change places. Work is also shown of artists and designers who took part in the recent Redlight Fashion, Art and Design projects, contributing to the transformation of the red light district.
